Bulletstorm Demo

YEAH!  FEEL THE POWER!  KICK SOME ASS AND TAKE A NAME!  OR DON'T TAKE THE NAME!  MAN HAVE YOU TRIED THIS MOUNTAIN DEW?  THIS SHIT IS AWESOME!

When I played the Bulletstorm demo, I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting - I had been semi following it since E3, and was incredibly interested after watching the initial trailer...It seemed like a first person gears of war, except the main character is Jack Black back when he was funny.  It's a ridiculously amazing blend of awesome game-play, well written and funny dialogue, and general over-the-top visuals.

I played the demo for the PlayStation 3, and I can honestly say I'll be buying this game.  This is a game that intentionally tries to poke fun at the stagnated genericness of most FPS games these days.  Most current games are filled with brown and bloom and try to go for that "edgy, gritty realism" effect that is, in my opinion, one of the dumbest things ever.  Kids today are so filled with shit when it comes to games, their eyes are turning brown.  Most think Call of Duty is one of the best game franchises of all time - and while it certainly is the best selling - the games themselves are generally utter crap, with terribly broken game play mechanics and multi-player that is only fun when you're winning.  I've always said, if you really want to play a modern first person shooter that badly, go join the military and get your fill while there's still a war going on.  Bulletstorm definitely is a stride in the opposite and proper direction.  With that full-throttle feel, your adrenaline starts pumping and the over the top game play mechanics and combo kills will keep you occupied for hours.

The Bulletstorm gameplay demo shown off at E3 2010.

My favorite weapon in the 3 weapon demo was the Grenade Rope Launcher.  It's a gun that launches 2 grenades attached to the ends of a rope - when the rope connects with something, it wraps around the target and the grenades explode, sending body parts flying everywhere.  My favorite combo kill is from using this weapon.  I killed 5 or 6 enemies at once and got the combo "Gang Bang" which actually made me laugh out loud when it happened.  It's honestly difficult to describe how amazing this game is probably going to be, so let me just give a quick rundown of the key points of the demo:

1. First person PoV
2.  Outrageous dialog
3. Excellent Ratchet and Clank style over the top weaponry
4. Enemies come at you like zombie from Left 4 Dead
5. Game play feels very smooth and exciting
6.  BULLETS GO IN THE BUTT.  YOU CAN SHOOT PEOPLE IN THE BUTT.  THERE'S AN ACHIEVEMENT FOR THAT.   GET TO IT!

I'm truly excited for this one, folks.  It's just a shame there won't be any multi-player, and I really don't say that often.  Games like Call of Duty are generally terrible because you pay $60 for a multi-player experience  that is most often broken and favors those who have played the longest by giving them unique guns and more powerful tools.  Those games have incredibly short single player campaigns because they spend most of their development time on the multi-player aspect.  When you only have a single year to make a brand new game, single player tends to take a back seat.  Games like Bulletstorm, and last years under-the-radar hit Vanquish from Platinum Games, focus on the single player to deliver an amazing experience that you just can't find in a multi-player oriented environment.  Halo and Gears of War are two of the few franchises that have ever successfully created a riveting single player campaign and an amazingly fun multi-player experience.  Hopefully, if they make a sequel, I can add Bullstorm to the list of amazing games that have successfully balanced the two aspects, but for now, the single player campaign is sure to knock your socks off and melt your eyes so you can never find them.

The Bulletstorm demo is now available on the PSN Store and also the Xbox Live Marketplace.
Note: The demo video I've posted is not the same demo you can download off the store.  So check those out!
