Bulletstorm Demo

YEAH!  FEEL THE POWER!  KICK SOME ASS AND TAKE A NAME!  OR DON'T TAKE THE NAME!  MAN HAVE YOU TRIED THIS MOUNTAIN DEW?  THIS SHIT IS AWESOME!

When I played the Bulletstorm demo, I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting - I had been semi following it since E3, and was incredibly interested after watching the initial trailer...It seemed like a first person gears of war, except the main character is Jack Black back when he was funny.  It's a ridiculously amazing blend of awesome game-play, well written and funny dialogue, and general over-the-top visuals.

I played the demo for the PlayStation 3, and I can honestly say I'll be buying this game.  This is a game that intentionally tries to poke fun at the stagnated genericness of most FPS games these days.  Most current games are filled with brown and bloom and try to go for that "edgy, gritty realism" effect that is, in my opinion, one of the dumbest things ever.  Kids today are so filled with shit when it comes to games, their eyes are turning brown.  Most think Call of Duty is one of the best game franchises of all time - and while it certainly is the best selling - the games themselves are generally utter crap, with terribly broken game play mechanics and multi-player that is only fun when you're winning.  I've always said, if you really want to play a modern first person shooter that badly, go join the military and get your fill while there's still a war going on.  Bulletstorm definitely is a stride in the opposite and proper direction.  With that full-throttle feel, your adrenaline starts pumping and the over the top game play mechanics and combo kills will keep you occupied for hours.

Exclusivity

The whole "console war" topic really makes me think sometimes.  I think people should buy the console that has the games they want to play and not buy the one that all their friends have.  Someone's gotta break the mold and be the trend setter.  In recent news, it was announced that a former game project, simply code named "Project Dark" will be released late this year as the spiritual successor to 2009's PS3 Game of the Year, Demon's Souls.

Demon's Soul was a fantastic, brutal, unforgiving dungeon crawler which took place in a medieval fantasy setting.  The game was about you, designing a character and then customizing it to play however you want, but what it really boiled down to was magic and swords.  You could use either or, or a combination and variety thereof.  The game was brutal and difficult, each death costly and proving to be a major setback.  Players who are more accustomed to todays standard "run in with complete disregard to personal safety" in game play found themselves at the receiving end of a premium rager.  The learning curve was painful, but just...so rewarding.  You needed to learn to block, to roll, to dodge, to counter attack.  You needed to play it safe at all times otherwise you will easily find yourself dying young.  When you die in this game, you leave a pool of blood behind with all the souls [read: money] you collected during the level, and start all the way back at the beginning.  If you die again, your previous blood stain is removed in favor of the new one, and with it, all the souls you collected.  That means that each death was very, very costly and players needed to tread lightly.
